The Unlikely Wedding Singer
When Chris Voysey popped the question, he had no idea what kind of controversy it would spark in the small country town of Inverell in northern NSW. Both Chris and and his (then) fiancé Lesley have intellectual disability and live within a supported accommodation service. When the local clergymen refused to marry them, the bride and groom took matters into their own hands, with the assistance of a committed team of support workers.
Using footage taken at the wedding by the local community, the film-maker visits the couple almost 2 years after the wedding to take a walk down memory lane. With equal parts of nostalgia and realism the audience is challenged to confront their own pre-conceived notions on who has the right to say ‘I do’ and who doesn’t, not to mention learn a thing or two about love and commitment.
